Stordalen Mire in northern Sweden has been subject to a decade of intense molecular and biogeochemical study, and almost 50 years of climate and vegetation research providing a unique opportunity to examine how microbial communities are changing alongside our climate. Stordalen is a palsa mire located 10 km east of Abisko where the Abisko Scientific Research Station (ANS) has been operating since 1913. In addition to providing a logistical base for the present study, ANS also developed an ongoing unique long‐term climate record [ Kohler et al. , 2006 ; Johansson et al. , 2008 ; T. Callaghan et al., manuscript in preparation, 2010].

A Preliminary Approximation of the Mercury Export From the Stordalen Mire [27] Hummock palsa subsidence and expansion of wet areas since 1970 is well documented in the Stordalen palsa mire [Christensen et al., 2004; Malmer et al., 2005] and could be used to estimate the size of the mercury pool mobilized following permafrost thawing. Stordalen Mire. They’ll tread across sag-ging wooden boardwalks, past clusters of clear plexiglass boxes placed among the cotton grass. Once every three hours during the mire’s short growing season, the lids on the boxes will close, allowing them to fill with methane — a powerful greenhouse gas — seeping up from the soil beneath.
